Page 1 of 2 The central Italian region of Abruzzo which has a reputation of being the country’s ‘best kept secret’ is giving up more of its treasures in 2008. The area steeped in fascinating history, ancient architecture and breathtaking landscapes is now being targeted by people looking for the quintessential Italian food and wine travel experience. Among the attractions is Abruzzo’s internationally acclaimed award winning Montepulciano red wine. No body appreciates this more than Brisbane couple Luciana Masci and Michael Howard. They spend six months of the year taking small tour groups through Abruzzo and Ms Masci says the regions culinary delights are becoming a big attraction. “The Abruzzese are not the type to go out and promote themselves or their region which is why Abruzzo has been under the tourism radar for so long. But as the experience of country Italy in Abruzzo becomes more popular, the wonderful food and wine is being discovered as well,” said Ms Masci. Abruzzo is the long lost Italy being discovered by the more mature and widely travelled public now looking for a cultural experience. Unspoiled and virtually untouched by modern tourism, Abruzzo provides an insight to centuries old arts and crafts, the areas medieval history and the village culture that has endured for hundreds of years. The region’s cuisine is perhaps Italy’s most diverse and imaginative. Abruzzese cooks have long been considered Italy’s best, and Absolutely Abruzzo Tour groups not only experience the fresh seasonal dishes but they learn how it’s prepared in cooking classes included in the itinerary. Absolutely Abruzzo Tours is now into its third year taking people to this Italian wonderland, making then somewhat expert in “My family is from Abruzzo and my extended family still lives there so Michael and I are continually adding new things to the itineraries so we can offer the best of Abruzzo. There is so much in Abruzzo the only proper way to experience it is through people who really know it,” Ms Masci said. An eight day tour led by Abruzzo specialists Luciana Masci and Michael Howard offers a number of different and interesting locations and experiences.
